Interior Styling for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
We were privileged to be given the opportunity to style a Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) for Home Caring. A brand new luxury 2 bedroom apartment to suit participants with high physical support or fully accessible needs.
Our aim was to combine style with safety to allow people with special needs to live comfortably in their homes. We made sure to always keep access in mind, and to envision the world from the perspective of that person.
In this article, we will show you some of the interior decorating tips we used to create a custom concept design for SDA.
Minimalist
No Clutter and Subtle Décor. We avoided over-cluttering with excessive furniture that restricts mobility.
Space
Spacious rooms are the key to a beautiful and accessible house. There should be ample space for ease of walking around the house, and the ability to wheel freely between all rooms, if needed.
Accessories
We added a few creative accessories, such as chic but non-obstructive lamps and side tables, soft cushions that are comforting to the touch, and patterned quilt covers to provide visual stimulus for those who may need help self-regulating.
Greenery
Plants can help relieve stress and improve one’s mood, so it was essential for us to include these to all rooms, including the kitchen and bathrooms.
Artwork
We focused on using soothing colours that can visually comfort someone who is overstimulated. We chose artwork that are interesting but not overwhelming to create a serene space.
Well-being
Safety and comfort are crucial for creating an ideal living environment for people with accessible needs and support. So, we took extra thought and care in making a tranquil and barrier-free interior for them to stay in.
